The Domino World Championship fills Salou with over 800 players from 17 countries

Salou. Costa Dorada. 10 October 2026. Salou has once again demonstrated its ability to host major international events with the celebration of the Domino World Championship, taking place in the municipality from October 8 to 11, 2026. A total of 816 players from 17 countries around the world are participating, with the Spanish and American delegations being the most numerous.

Participants hail from Puerto Rico, Chile, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, the United States, and Mexico. European nations are also represented by players from Portugal, the Netherlands, Georgia, and Russia, while Iran and Egypt represent Asia and Africa.

The World Championship is organized by the International Domino Federation, the Spanish Domino Federation, the Catalan Domino Federation, the Provincial Domino Association of Tarragona, and the Salou Domino Club Association, with the collaboration of the Salou City Council and the Municipal Tourism Board.

During the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, celebrated that the municipality "has become a meeting point for players from so many parts of the world" and invited participants and their companions to "enjoy Salou, walk along the sea, explore the coastal path, and discover our heritage, gastronomy, and other key spots across the Tarragona region."

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Berni Álvarez, emphasized that this World Championship offers a great opportunity for participants to see that "Catalonia is a welcoming land" and to become "ambassadors for this town and this country."

In his address, the President of the International Domino Federation, Manuel Oquendo, stressed the inclusive nature of the sport, noting that "this championship features men and women of all ages and social backgrounds. The oldest participant is 87 years old. Furthermore, there are individuals with physical and mental disabilities, including a visually impaired player."

The opening event also featured speeches by the President of the Spanish Domino Federation, Faustino Alegría; the President of the Catalan Domino Federation, Antonio Carmona, who hosted the ceremony; the President of the Provincial Domino Association of Tarragona, Diego Arjona; and the parish priest of Salou, Antonio Rodríguez. The event was also attended by the sub-delegate of the Central Government, Elisabet Romero; the Councillor for Sports, Yeray Moreno; and the Councillor for Culture, Education, and Citizen Participation, Julia Gómez.

Mayor Pere Granados and Sports Minister Berni Álvarez played the ceremonial opening match alongside the President of the International Federation, Manuel Oquendo, and the parish priest of Salou, Antonio Rodríguez.

In addition to the tournament itself and local activities showcasing Salou’s main attractions, excursion programs have been scheduled to visit Tarragona, Montblanc, the Poblet Monastery (a key site on the Cistercian Route), and Barcelona.

Finally, Salou served as the venue where the International Domino Federation selected Abkhazia—a republic recognized by the majority of the international community as part of Georgia—as the host location for the 2027 World Championship.
