Tips for Children to Enjoy the Solar Eclipse Safely

Family

Salou. Costa Dorada. 04 August 2026.

The solar eclipse will be a special moment for many families. For children, it is a great opportunity to witness a rare natural event, but it is important to follow a few simple recommendations to make sure they can enjoy it safely.

The most important rule is that children should always be supervised by an adult while watching the eclipse. It is also a good idea to practise at home how to put on and remove eclipse glasses correctly before the day of the event.

The recommended steps are simple:

  1. Put on the eclipse glasses while looking at the ground and make sure they completely cover the eyes.
  2. Then raise your head to look at the Sun.
  3. When you have finished watching, look back down at the ground.
  4. Remove the glasses only after turning away from the Sun or looking in another direction.

If children are very young or are not able to follow these instructions, they should not look directly at the Sun, even while wearing eclipse glasses. Instead, they should watch the eclipse using an indirect projection method or through a live TV or online broadcast. Another option is to attach the solar filter to a piece of cardboard or a paper plate, making it easier for children to use safely.

A Great Learning Opportunity

A solar eclipse is also a wonderful chance to learn together as a family. Explaining to children, in simple words, that the Moon will pass in front of the Sun and cover part of it will help them better understand what they are seeing.

If you plan to watch the eclipse outdoors, remember to bring water, a hat and sunscreen, choose a safe place with a clear view of the sky, and remind children never to remove their eclipse glasses while looking at the Sun, even if the sunlight appears less bright.
