Learn About the Solar Eclipse Through Activities in Salou

Salou will be one of the best places in Catalonia to witness the total solar eclipse on 12 August. The eclipse will begin at 8:30 p.m., with the totality phase lasting approximately 1 minute and 8 seconds.

 

To mark this astronomical event, Salou Town Council and the Salou Municipal Tourist Board have organised a wide-ranging programme of educational and leisure activities for all ages in the days leading up to the eclipse.

 

Friday, 7 August

• 8:00 p.m. – Torre Vella, Salou. Lecture on the solar eclipse by the associate Professor at Rovira i Virgili University and astrophysicist Carlos García Gómez: "Total Solar Eclipses: An Extraordinary Experience."

Thursday, 6 August

• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Take part in "Looking at the Sky", a science outreach programme organised by Cel Obert, Sensacions de l'Univers. The activity includes four educational sessions, four astronomy missions, practical workshops, books and a planetarium to discover the stars, planets and constellations. Free activity for children aged 8 and over.

Monday, 10 August

• 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – Carrilet Station Children's Centre. Build your own Solar Eclipse Memory Game.
• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Join the workshop "The Eclipse on Your Mobile: Capturing the Darkness", led by photographer, naturalist and environmental educator Pep Aguadé. Learn how to photograph the solar eclipse using your smartphone. Free activity for young people aged 12 and over.

Tuesday, 11 August

• 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – Carrilet Station Children's Centre. Enjoy the storytelling session "The Day the Moon Wanted to Be the Sun", written by Maite Castellanos and narrated by Mariona Jurado. A puppet-making workshop will follow the story.

Wednesday, 12 August

• 7:00 p.m. – Ponent Beach (Nautical Base). Enjoy a beach yoga session led by Nexum Fitness.

Thursday, 13 August

• 5:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – Carrilet Station Children's Centre. Create a solar eclipse using modelling clay.
• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Take part in another session of "Looking at the Sky", organised by Cel Obert, Sensacions de l'Univers.

Friday, 14 August

• 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – Carrilet Station Children's Centre. Build your own Solar Eclipse Tic-Tac-Toe Game.

Tuesday, 18 August

• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Take part in "Starry Tales: A Universe of Stories", a storytelling session led by the educational cooperative Cuentropía, designed to introduce young children to the wonders of astronomy. Free activity for children aged 4 and over.

Thursday, 20 August

• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Join another session of "Looking at the Sky", organised by Cel Obert, Sensacions de l'Univers.

Thursday, 27 August

• 6:00 p.m. – Salou Municipal Library. Attend the final session of "Looking at the Sky", organised by Cel Obert, Sensacions de l'Univers.

The Town Council also reminds everyone that, to enjoy the eclipse safely, it is essential to follow the recommended safety guidelines and use only certified eclipse glasses or other approved solar viewing devices.
