Salou to host the 22nd Domino World Championship from October 8 to 11 with nearly a thousand participants

Salou. Costa Dorada. 28 September 2026. Salou will host the 22nd Domino World Championship. The event, jointly organized by the Spanish Federation and the Domino Association of Tarragona in collaboration with the Salou City Council, will bring together around 900 players from more than 20 countries across four continents.
Last year, the World Championship took place in Puerto Rico, and on October 8, at the Torre Vella in Salou, the delegations will decide where the 2027 edition will be held.
During the official presentation, Antonio Carmona, representing the Federation, thanked Salou for its hospitality and willingness to host the competition. Meanwhile, Diego Arjona, a Salou resident and president of the Domino Association of Tarragona since 2013, highlighted the importance for the region of hosting a championship of this scale: "Organizing a World Championship is neither easy nor cheap. Thanks to hosting it here, 120 players from Tarragona will be able to participate, whereas otherwise local participation would be much lower."
Three categories and international presence
The tournament will be held at the Ponent Pavilion in Salou and will consist of a total of 42 matches divided into three main categories: mixed (teams composed of one man and one woman), individual (where each player is assigned matches via computer software), and teams or national selections.
The event will feature strong international representation. Although there will be around 410 Spanish participants—including 110 local players from the Tarragona region and delegations from Aragon, Valencia, Andalusia, Madrid, and the Canary Islands—the majority of participants will hail from the Americas and the Caribbean (such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Venezuela), alongside players from the US, Syria, and several European countries. Among the most prominent attendees will be the reigning world champion from the Dominican Republic, who has held the title for a decade.
Salou, major events
The Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, emphasized that the event aligns with the town's international vision and will showcase its offerings beyond sun-and-sand tourism: "Salou represents gastronomy, as well as cultural, historical, and natural heritage. We are an ideal venue for hosting major sporting events."
Beyond the competition, organizers have arranged a cultural tour program for companions, featuring trips to Roman Tarragona, Barcelona, and the Poblet Monastery.
The event organizers have reserved around ten hotels, as the World Championship is expected to attract approximately 8,000 people, including participants, staff, family members, and supporters.
The Federation highlighted the social role of dominoes, noting that it is the main activity in Catalonia's more than 15,000 senior centers. They also emphasized workshops conducted in schools and residences for individuals with special needs, citing cognitive benefits such as improved concentration, memory retention, and social connection.
