Salou has the first smart pool in Catalonia of the EPIC network

Salou. Costa Dorada. 10 January 2026. The municipal swimming pool of Salou has released an advanced system of intelligent sensors that allows to monitor in real time the activity of the swimmers, reinforce the safety and the experience of the users, and make a more efficient management of the equipment. With this technology, Salou is the first municipality in Catalonia that integrates its pool in the Spanish Network of Connected Smart Swimming Pools (EPIC).

The project is promoted by the City Council of Salou, the Spanish Sports Council and the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, and aims to promote the practice and safety of swimming. By installing the nagi system in the pool, swimmers can know in real time the distance they have born, the time they spend in the water or the lengths they make. In addition, the system maintains a direct connection with lifeguards to prevent drowning.

How the smart pool works

Swimmers only have to take a small device at their disposal in the pool, press the botton and take the device with the ribbon of the glasses. From that moment on, they will be able to receive real-time data on their activity and, if they share them, compare with other athletes.

The fact that the municipal pool of Salou is connected to the EPIC network means that users can also carry out activities together with swimmers from other swimming pools in other municipalities, such as the challenge that was made at Christmas in which users of 30 Spanish swimming pools swim more than 5,000 km.

A smart pool for everyone

The new smart pool is designed for all user profiles: families, athletes, schools and the elderly. In this sense, the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados stressed that "this smart pool improves the user experience, but above all strengthens Salou's commitment to well-being, public health and the quality of sports activities."

The mayor wanted to express special thanks to the Superior Council of Sports, the Spanish Federation of Swimming and the company Zonyx, highlighting that their collaboration "has been decisive to make this project possible." He has also congratulated the Councilor for Sports of the City Council, Yeray Moreno, for making this project a reality.

In the presentation of the new system, the deputy director of the Higher Sports Council (CSD) and director of the Deporte Joven Foundation, Aitor Canibe, stressed that the objective of the project “is not only about performance, but also about making healthy and safe swimming pools”. He thanked "the commitment of Salou for sport and sustainable tourism." 

Finally, the president of the Real Federación Espa·ola de Natación, Fernando Carpena, explained "the collaboration with swimming clubs and the work done by the athletes of Salou" and assured the smart pool "places Salou on another level."

The implementation of the nagi system has involved an investment of approximately 80,000 euros. 50% of the cost has been financed by the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, while the rest has been carried out by the City of Salou, with the support of the European Next Generation funds.

Salou sports reference

In addition to offering a better service to residents, the smart pool of Salou is one more step in the positioning of the municipality as a sports tourism destination, as endorsed by the certifications available to the capital of the Costa Dorada.

In this sense, the mayor of Salou stressed that "this project places Salou as a benchmark for other municipalities, demonstrating that Salou returns to lead, innovates again and is committed to people and their future."
