Wreath-laying ceremony in Salou to mark the 750th anniversary of the death of Jaume I
Salou. Costa Dorada. 31 July 2026. The municipality of Salou commemorated the figure of Jaume I this past Monday on the 750th anniversary of his death. The main event brought together local residents and authorities for a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of the Conqueridor king, paying tribute to the monarch who transformed the port of Salou into the launching point for the conquest of Mallorca in 1229.
The day began in the morning with a visit by the alcalde and the regidora de cultura to the Monestir de Poblet, where they paid their respects at the king's tomb. In the evening, the gathering along the passeig featured a performance of "El cant dels ocells", readings from the Llibre dels Feits, and official speeches by Ricard Ibarra and the alcalde of Salou, Pere Granados. Prior to the end of the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled.
Music took center stage in the final stretch of the event, which featured medieval chronicles read by Júlia Gómez and Jordi Sardiña, cellist Jenia Kobylyanska performing a piece by Bach, and a performance by the colla gegantera to wrap up the official commemoration.
