The new Eix Cívic makes its way when the train tracks disappear

Eix Cívic

Salou. Costa Dorada. 02 May 2022. After years of demands, the train stopped running through the urban center of Salou in January 2020. Although the train tracks still remain, dividing the municipality in two, the urban remodeling project for the space, baptized as Eix Cívic, is already underway.

The forecast is that the train tracks will be dismantled at the end of the summer, which will allow the urban planning of 64,976 square meters of land, of which 56,235 square meters will be public land (86.55%) and 8,741 meters of public land. private (13.45%).

A large avenue for pedestrians and services will be built throughout this space. The new avenue will be built parallel to the promenades along the coastline, with large blue/green and tree-lined areas, which will fluff up the urban space and articulate a new, more permeable mobility, which will integrate the two parts of the municipality now divided by roads . In addition, the circulation of sustainable transport is planned, such as the tram and the bicycle.

At an urban level, it is worth highlighting the integration of historical elements of the area, marking a monumental and historical complex that will include the Torre Vella, the Carrilet Station and the Church of Santa María, among other elements.

In addition, the Eix Cívic includes a large central park, a civic square of almost 2 hectares, in front of the Torre Vella, and new free spaces and public facilities will be generated, such as the underground car park designed for more than 500 spaces.

The project also includes residential buildings, with commercial use, with the intention of boosting economic activity. There will be 99 protected dwellings in the generic regime and 207 free dwellings. An 8-storey building will also be built that will represent the centrality of the Eix Cívic, with respect to all the buildings.

The work has an approximate cost of 14 million. It is scheduled to start in 2025 and end around 2027.

In the presentation of the project, the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, highlighted that the Eix Cívic will generate an "inclusive city and an integrating Salou, with universal accessibility", and "with sustainable transport".

For his part, the Councilor for Land Management, Marc Montagut, explained that the Eix Cívic will contribute to revitalizing "the Barri de la Salut, the old town, Nord Street and Major Street" and "quick access to the beaches and walks.
