The story of King Jaime I sister the towns of Salou and Calvià

The twinning was approved in full in July

Salou. Costa Dorada. 31 August 2018. The plenary session of the city council of Salou approved last July the twinning of the municipality with that of Calvià, in Majorca, to which joins the history related to King Jaime I. Today this agreement was made effective through a meeting held in the town Mallorcan The twinning aims to unite affinities, tourism, sports, culture, education and social integration.

The Mayor Pere Granados, accompanied by the Councilor for Tourism, Benet Presas, the Councilor for Culture and Festivities, María José Rodríguez, the Councilor for Mobility and Public Safety, David González, and the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Julia Gómez, visited the municipality of Calvià, in Majorca, where the first of the two meetings has taken place, consisting of the twinning of the capital of the Costa Dorada with the Mallorcan municipality. Next week will be the members of the Calvià corporation who visit the capital of the Costa Dorada.

This afternoon, in an act in the plenary hall has been carried out the signature of the act at the hands of the two mayors, Alfonso Rodríguez and Pere Granados; and next Wednesday afternoon will repeat the scene but already in Salou, ending the initial act of twinning between the two municipalities that share historical ties, affinities and interests in common, similar characteristics and the common organization of a nautical activity. As highlighted by the mayor, Pere Granados, in his speech the links between the municipalities, not only have an important historical dimension, because from the littoral of Salou sailed in 1229 the fleet of ships commanded by King James I towards the conquest of Mallorca, disembarking days later in the coast of Calvià (Santa Ponça). But, more significantly, between both cities there are affinities of socioeconomic type, since their coinciding economy based on services and sun and beach tourism, makes them share characteristics, interests and objectives; as well as similar needs and problems, given its similar activity, which means that its municipal management and organization must respond to common situations in terms of the provision of services and efficiency and optimization of resources.

In this sense, outside the historical scope and its symbolism, tourism activity and experience is the nexus of objective and manifest union between the two societies.

Remember that from the commemorative point of view of the capital event of shared history, since 1987 a sports activity has already been held, the Rei Regatta in Jaume, co-organized by the yacht clubs of both towns (Club Náutico de Salou and Club Náutico de Santa Ponça), which today has also been presented in Mallorcan lands after the signing of the twinning agreement. This regatta revives the crossing of the ships of the conquering king in 1229, and counts on the collaboration of the two city councils.

The mayor explained that "a twinning is essentially a unique opportunity for rapprochement between people and entities of two localities, which creates a stable framework for cooperation and opens a more or less broad program of dialogue, relations, knowledge mutual and exchange between two peoples and their special characteristics and identity, where both parties learn and are enriched "and has ensured that" this twinning is formalized by the agreement adopted between the two municipalities with the will to establish a relationship, solidarity and friendship, that enrich us as peoples and as people".
