The Feast of King Jaume I turns the center of Salou into a medieval city

The party of King Jaume I comes this year to the XXIII edition



Salou. Costa Dorada. 24 August 2018. Salou will travel to the past to commemorate the departure of the troops of King Jaume I 789 years ago at a party that bears his name. For 23 years, the capital of the Costa Daurada celebrates that anniversary and does so from August 30 to September 2 through a parade and a medieval market that is located in the center of the city. The activity will be centered on the streets of the old town and that encompasses cultural activities, trade and promotion, and other dynamic elements. The mayor, Pere Granados, has highlighted "the great offer of leisure and culture that Salou proposes these days with a week where the streets are filled with activities that recall a historic date for the municipality."

On behalf of the Department of Promotion and Economic Revitalization, Trade, Markets and Consumption and with the aim of boosting the economy and trade of the area of ​​the old town this year the medieval market is organized again. Many of them are supervised by artisans such as the soapmaker, the goldsmith, elaboration and distillation of essential oils, alpargatero, among many others, which opens on Thursday, August 30 at 11 o'clock in the morning in the old town, and which ends on Sunday 2 at night. Each day the doors will open at 10.30 am until 2 pm and reopen at 5 pm and close at 11 pm, except on Sunday, when the market ends at 10 pm. To liven up these medieval market days, visitors can enjoy daily entertainment shows; where you can find ancient crafts, food, Arabic music, fire, or acrobatics; reproductions of games and tables for a playful and pedagogical use. There will also be a children's corner in the garden of the public library where various activities for the little ones will be done.

The medieval facilities will be extended to other areas of the municipality such as Plaza Bonet, Plaza 11 de Septiembre (c / Ciudad de Reus), and the square next to the Municipal Market (Via Roma). "We want to complement a week around the medieval events that highlights, once again, a good promotion of the municipality making it extensive in different places of Salou," said the councilor of the area, Martina Fourrier, added that "everyone who want you can enjoy a medieval experience in every way. "

On the other hand, the Department of Culture also joins the events of the celebration preparing a set of events around the XXIII edition of this party that will center its activity on Saturday September 1 with the departure of King Jaume I and his entourage (at 7pm), from the Plaza del TAS to the Torre Vella and the traditional exit of the King (from 8pm) from the Torre Vella. A procession where more than 300 Salouences / as are dressed in period recreating that staging. Soldiers, monks, people, nobles, knights, King Jaime I and his wife Violant of Hungary heading the procession will cross the streets of Salou to reach the beach of Levante where there will be a performance of all the entertainment groups and an equestrian show at 9:00 pm at the Levante Beach.

On Sunday 2nd from 7:00 pm, the II Jaume I Horseball Tournament will be held on Levante beach, where two teams of four players on horseback per side (plus two reserves of each team), must collect from the ground, without disassembling, a ball wrapped in a frame with six leather handles and, through a set of passes and defenses, have it inserted in baskets raised vertically at the ends of the field. This discipline stands out for its spectacularity, rapidity of movements of the player with the horse and the peculiarity of collecting the ball without getting off the horse every time it falls to the ground.

For the Councilor for Culture, Mª José Rodríguez, "this is a very participatory party for Salouenses and visitors, and from the City of Salou appreciate the involvement of the people who make it possible and who contribute their time, effort and enthusiasm "

All this, recalls the year 1229 when Jaime I was waiting months to pick up a large enough army to be able to start towards the conquest of Mallorca. At about 8:45 pm the procession will arrive at the Levante beach where the performances of the animation groups, an equestrian show and the expected parliament of the King. All this a great medieval festival that contains all the ingredients to attract a large native audience and visitors.

The Municipal Library of Salou, on Friday, August 31 at 6:30 pm, will host Blanca de Anjou "the most beautiful woman, and the pus was wise, and the funny pus", a lecture by Dr. Antoni Conejo da Pena , Professor of History at the University of Barcelona.

In parallel, the Salou Yacht Club organizes the XXXII King's Regatta in Jaume from September 7 to 9.
