Repsol collaborates in the construction of the Garden of the Butterflies of the URV

Salou. Costa Dorada. 15 March 2018. Today, March 14, the Garden of the Butterflies of the Rovira i Virgili University has been inaugurated. The Rector of the URV, Dr. Josep Anton Ferré, and the person in charge of Communications and External Relations of Repsol in Tarragona, Josep Bertran. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the URV, Repsol has collaborated in the construction of this garden.

The space has more than 200 square meters and is located between the gateway to the CRAI and the E1 classroom building of the Sescelades campus. The flowerings of the plants in this garden attract butterflies, which can feed and reproduce in this new space. In this way you can recover some of the original natural space occupied by the campus, which is located on old abandoned crops.

In the garden, plants with low water needs have been cultivated and thus has sheltered more than twenty species of butterflies and many other pollinators. The garden will also house other insects and birds that are currently displaced from the campus.

The main objective of this initiative is to promote local biodiversity and allow these insects to feed themselves and reproduce. A good indicator of environmental quality, it is the butterflies, since they are very sensitive to the degradation of the habitats. Therefore, it is about improving the flora and fauna of our immediate environment, to achieve an optimum environmental level.
