The Polytechnic University of Catalonia will carry out a study to know the impact of the natural elements on the beaches of the municipality, especially the causes of the regression of the coast. The investigation will lead to a comprehensive and detailed report of the affectation (by natural elements and infrastructures), stability and future of the beaches of the municipality. This study will evaluate the evolution of the beaches of Salou and what may be the causes of the loss of sediment that has been occurring lately; although it is due to issues such as climate change or there are other external factors.
The object of the study, as pointed out by the councilor of beaches Julia Gómez, is to analyze the stability of the beaches of Salou and its possible impact due to unnatural actions, especially dredging in nearby areas or if an indirect effect by the Port of Tarragona, with the analysis of the environmental studies in which these actions or infrastructures are based, determining the correction of them.
The study will also estimate the implications of anticipated changes on recreational load capacity and natural protection for beaches. It is also intended to analyze the effect of climate change on the stability of the beaches of Salou in the 21st century under different scenarios of anticipated change. Finally, the possibilities of regeneration of the beaches will also be evaluated and determined, with the perspective of demanding the execution of infrastructures to the competent administrations and improving the execution of these in the framework of the municipal competences corresponding to the municipality of Salou.
Julia Gómez, stressed that "with this study we will have a realistic view of the state of our beaches and will help us assess future decisions to recover one of our main attractions." Gómez, has highlighted the technical specialization of the personnel proposed to carry out the technical study. And he recalled how, meanwhile, year after year "we invest many thousands of euros each year in the replacement of beach sand to keep this space for leisure for Salouenses and many visitors in the best possible conditions." The study will entail an expense of 19,360 euros.
