Mayors of the coastal municipalities claim to speed up the dismantling of the railroad

Meeting between mayors and the Government delegate in Catalonia.

Salou. Costa Dorada. 16 February 2018. The mayors of Salou, Cambrils, Mont-roig, Hospitalet de l'Infant-Vandellòs and Vinyols have called on the government delegate in Catalonia, Enric Millo, to prioritize and accelerate the dismantling of the road. The petition was made during a meeting held in the sub-delegation of the Government in Tarragona. The meeting was led by the concern that the new railway configuration of the Mediterranean Corridor be effective as soon as possible. It is especially requested that the deadlines be respected, as well as the schedule foreseen for the dismantling of the road that crosses its municipalities.

The Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, explains that in the Capital of the Costa Dorada the dismantling of the current infrastructure as it passes through Salou will allow the construction of a large avenue (Civic Axis) that will structure and dynamize the city from the socioeconomic point of view, it will facilitate internal mobility by eliminating a barrier that divides the urban nucleus, and will promote an area of greater urban quality and services.

Granados also recalled that once the Mediterranean Corridor (scheduled for this year) enters service, and the urban stretch of Salou is freed from the roads "the City already plans to order and urbanize the layout with the Civic Axis project, including a trace where to implement a light transport medium of sustainable mobility, TrenTram type ".

The mayors have unanimously stressed their concern about whether the railway infrastructure is maintained for too long, as it would damage the image of the very heart of the tourist destinations, and would have to support a space without urbanizing with all the problems that this could entail for an urban nucleus.

Millo is committed to transfer and inform the Ministry the position and reasons of the mayors, assessing the consensus and proposing the establishment of a monitoring and information body, in order to evaluate and discuss the progress and developments they are happening.
